Darrel L James
I am a trauma-informed, relational, humanistic counsellor and psychotherapist. I will support you in exploring and making sense of the challenges you are facing in a safe and confidential environment.
I offer a calm and non-judgemental space in which you can speak openly about whatever is on your mind. My priority is to build a compassionate and collaborative therapeutic relationship where you feel supported and understood. My work is grounded in a person-centred approach. This means that you set the pace and direction of therapy, and I walk alongside you as you explore your feelings, relationships, life experiences and sense of meaning and purpose. Therapy is led by you, not directed by me, and is shaped by what you feel ready to bring within a relationship rooted in trust, respect and care.
Humanistic and Person-Centred Therapy
Humanistic values sit at the heart of my practice. I place strong emphasis on free will, self-discovery and the innate capacity for growth and change. Together, we work towards your greater fulfilment, autonomy and self-determination, supporting you to reconnect with your own inner knowledge, agency and potential. Rather than focusing solely on problems or symptoms, humanistic therapy looks at what makes you who you are: your uniqueness, your lived experience and your relationship with the world around you. This approach supports deeper self-understanding, helps break unhelpful patterns and creates space for meaningful change.
Trauma-Informed Practice
Trauma, distress and painful life experiences can erode self-worth and make it difficult to recognise your own value. Through gentle exploration and careful attention to your inner world, therapy can help restore a stronger sense of self. Over time, this process can support emotional growth, deepen self-understanding and enable you to find your own solutions, both in the present and in the future. My approach is sensitive to the impact of trauma and prioritises safety, pacing and emotional regulation.
What to Expect from Therapy
I offer a grounded and flexible therapeutic environment in which you are free to express whatever you need to, at your own pace. Therapy may be short-term or longer-term, depending on what feels right for you and our work will adapt as your needs, circumstances and priorities evolve. Counselling is a collaborative process. You bring your concerns, feelings and ways of understanding the world; I offer curiosity, compassion and professional support. This partnership fosters greater self-awareness, confidence and independence, and helps you identify both the internal and external resources that support your wellbeing.
I will support you in recognising and strengthening these resources, reinforcing the understanding that you always have options and choices available to you.
You are the Expert on Your Own Life
Ultimately, you are the expert on your own life. No one else knows what it is like to be you. My role is not to direct, but to support you in exploring your thoughts, feelings, beliefs, behaviours and ways of seeing the world. This process supports greater clarity, emotional autonomy and self-trust. Each person is unique, and therapy honours that individuality.
My aim is to create a therapeutic relationship in which you feel safe enough to speak openly about what troubles you. Many people need space to talk about trauma, emotional pain or experiences that may not feel comfortable disclosing elsewhere. Even the act of sharing private thoughts with a therapist can itself be profoundly healing. We work flexibly with your individual needs as they arise.
